His experiences throughout his classes caused his dreams to broaden, which would tremendously benefit his future. Through this statement, Hanks portrays pathos by showing the audience how classes he took at community college, sparked his interest in theater. Those plays filled my head with expanded dreams. I got to see the plays he taught, through student rush tickets at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and the Berkeley Repertory Theater. “In Herb Kennedy’s Drama in Performance, I read plays like ‘The Hot L Baltimore’ and ‘Desire Under the Elms,’ then saw their productions. Hanks explains how his college classes were riveting and entertaining pertaining to his interest, along with informing him tremendously on theater. By Hanks addressing his personal experiences of his attendance to a junior college and inability to afford higher education, he relates to many students of America that are in similar circumstances. Not only does Hanks use ethos throughout this statement, but he also addresses pathos: appealing to emotion. I sent my final set of stats to Chabot, a community college in nearby Hayward, Calif., which, because it accepted everyone and was free, would be my alma mater”(2). Hanks states, “I couldn’t afford tuition for college anyway. Hanks’ article will be listened and analyzed deeply because of his status, especially since he was a student who attended a junior college for his first two years of higher education. By Tom Hanks fame for his award winning movies and roles, his pieces of writings will be publicized and noticed by the public, exemplifying a key concept of ethos appealing to credibility. ![]() When famous actor and director Tom Hanks writes an article for “New York Times”, it won’t go unnoticed and will grasp the attention of readers instantly due to his credibility. Readers naturally appeal to credible authors when reading articles, autobiographies or novels it is an outlet for audiences to connect to their storytellers. ![]() Hanks’ succeeds with his claims of community college being a substantial alternative to students in search of a cheaper higher education, through his use of ethos, pathos, and comparing/contrasting. Community college may be argued as low-level education that’s incomparable to universities and private institutions, but Tom Hanks’ article “I Owe It All to Community College ,” addressed his experience at a two-year junior college in Hayward, California with positive critique. Graduated high school students, mothers, fathers and drop outs across the country are limited to higher education opportunities due to the high cost, however with Obama’s new plan to develop free two years of community college, hope has replenished those who were constrained by costly tuition. Since 1985, college prices have surged 538% according to Bloomberg news (Jamrisko & Kolet). With the progression of higher education and the demand of its importance, college has grown into an expense that is unrealistic for the majority of the lower and middle classes of America. ![]()
